The field outside the forest could be seen from where they were. ” Loghain couldn’t place the young man’s accent, but from the way he spoke it was clear he was educated. A merchant’s son, perhaps? ” He gestured at the blond man’s tattered clothing, noting he didn’t even have a cloak. ” He raised an eyebrow. ” Dannon demanded, shoving his way up beside Loghain. The blond man paused, glancing between Loghain and Dannon as if uncertain to whom he should be responding first.

We give him to them,” he argued. “Father, he said it himself. ” In a fury, Loghain leaped forward and grabbed his father’s shoulder, spinning him around. “Father—” The word was stated with unmistakeable emphasis. It said listen to me. “—we don’t . . owe him . . ” Gareth’s expression became sad, and with a gentle gesture he reached up and removed Loghain’s hand from his shoulder. Loghain did not resist, and the fury seemed to drain out of him as realization grew in his face. A witness to the moment that passed between father and son, Maric didn’t immediately understand it.

She noticed his gaze and smiled. ” She finished wringing out the stained cloth and then returned to wiping his face. The water was cool and refreshing, and so Maric closed his eyes and allowed her to minister to him. When she finally stopped, he touched her hand. “How long have I . . ” She paused, studying him with those weary gray eyes. There was compassion there, he saw, but also suspicion. “Most of the day,” she finally answered. Then she smiled reassuringly and stroked the hair from his forehead.
